Downloaded Google SketchUp for fun and tried creating 3D houses for Google Maps. 5 dull four corner houses later, I decided to model something a lot more challenging.
I grabbed my RX-78 Gundam model and scanned the sample schematics and started modeling starting with primitives.
Here are some screen shots taken with SketchUp’s export feature:

I started with the RX-78’s head, getting an approximate height of 18m from Sankaku Complex. According to Sankaku, Bandai plans to build a standing scale RX-78 which would stand as high as 18m.
With the scanned schematics in place, I traced the head’s front view and made a lot of measurement guesses relying on imaginary scales in my head. To make things easier, I chopped the head in two and worked on one side and will copy the final model later since the model is symmetrical.
