World’s most stunning airport landings revealed

Few moments in travel match the view from a descending plane as it nears one of the world’s most striking airport landings. A recent study used eye-tracking technology to rank 32 global airports, measuring how quickly and how long participants focused on images of their runways.

Australia’s Lord Howe Island Airport claimed the top spot. Its approach reveals a remote island framed by turquoise waters and dense forests, a view that held travelers’ attention longer than any other location in the study.

How the rankings were decided

The study presented 100 participants with runway images from 32 airports. Eye-tracking data recorded the speed at which viewers first noticed each image and the average time they spent looking at it. These two metrics formed a single “eye-catching score” for each airport.

Lord Howe Island led with a score of 85, followed by New Zealand’s Queenstown Airport at 79. Both locations feature challenging terrain—Queenstown’s approach cuts through jagged peaks and a glacial lake, while the island’s narrow runway sits between ocean and mountain.

Madeira Airport in Portugal and Pitkin County Airport in Colorado tied for third place. Madeira’s runway extends over the Atlantic, with cliffs and villages visible below, while Pitkin’s approach winds through the Rocky Mountains, offering a technical challenge for pilots.

London City Airport ranked fifth. Its descent provides a sweeping view of the Thames and skyscrapers, differing from the open settings of higher-ranked airports.
