He has built a reliable list of spots to visit every year, places he returns to without fail to escape the madness.

Noodles and Dumplings sits on South Clerk Street. The restaurant makes its noodles by hand and cuts the wontons fresh daily. Wang recalls eating a wonton noodle soup there that remains one of the best he has ever tasted. He even started reviewing East Asian restaurants in Edinburgh after first visit. His posts helped turn the spot into a favorite among performers.

Mosque Kitchen offers a different kind of meal. It operates like a cafeteria, where you scoop rice and curry onto a disposable plate. The portions are large and the prices are low, making it a practical choice for performers running between shows. The atmosphere is communal; comedians often perch on other people’s tables to eat and chat.

For something more intimate, Macau Kitchen serves Macanese cuisine. The owners, Kei and Hoeyyn, display the framed award Wang gave on the wall. The space feels like a living room, but securing a table requires advance booking due to popularity. Wang recommends the sour pork curry.

Outside the venues, the city offers quiet respite. Dean Village feels like a fairytale setting, far removed from the festival crowds. Wang visited once for a medical check before a comedy show and was struck by beauty. Calton Hill provides another option, offering views of the city without the strenuous climb of Arthur’s Seat.

The Pleasance Courtyard functions as the festival’s social hub. It connects the various venues and keeps a constant buzz of activity. Wang remembers the sold-out board outside as a source of excitement for early shows. Summer Hall offers a different vibe, located in a former medical school with a courtyard pub and a quirky, hidden atmosphere.

Monkey Barrel Comedy venues on Blair Street provide a professional space for stand-up. Wang performs there often and admires the variety of rooms. The Pleasance Beneath offers a cooler, more secluded environment, which Wang considers ideal for a run of shows.
